Now, Disney World is testing an all-new facial recognition system for park entry that could replace finger scanners. The process is currently opt-in through April 23rd as it’s tested and Disney collects data (You know we gave it a try!). Some folks aren’t loving the idea of facial recognition, so we wanted to break down how it works!

It’s just another way the Disney park experience seems to be going hands-free, in the wake of the new MagicMobile service, and My Disney Experience updates that enable Mobile Order, digital merchandise check out, and more. But this tech-y new feature seems like a BIG step into the future…and a big change overall.

But now, MORE changes are on the way. Earlier today, we shared that a NEW facial recognition system would be testing in Magic Kingdom for park entry, and today we got to see it in action!
Disney’s brand-new MagicMobile service is here!

Disney announced the new tech earlier this month — it essentially turns your phone into your MagicBand! You’re able to use your smart device (and yup, that includes your Apple Watch!) to tap into the parks, link your PhotoPass photos, and more. And while Disney stated that the service is rolling out in phases throughout 2021, it is already live for ALL Apple users.

The MagicMobile service enables your smart device — your phone, Apple Watch, etc. — to function as your MagicBand! And while the feature won’t replace MagicBands entirely (you’ll still be able to choose designs based on your favorite characters, attractions, and more!), it provides an alternative for those who want everything streamlined down to one device.

We’ve seen quite a few changes to technology like MagicBands! They’re no longer free to Disney resort guests, who can opt to get a Key to the World card instead. And soon, guests will have a third way to manage their vacation: the brand-new MagicMobile service.
We’ve seen Disney World change a ton in the couple of years. The global health crisis turned the world on its head and made Disney rethink the entire theme park experience.

Extensive health and safety regulations were introduced which affected everything from dining to character interactions. The changes were implemented with limited capacity and physical distancing in mind. Disney has been subtly updating these changes over the last few months but there are still a few glitches that many guests have encountered. Disney continues to move technology forward in it’s dining systems and restaurants. Just recently, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe in the Magic Kingdom installed LCD screens to feature menu items.
We’ve seen screens like this at some food courts and counter-service restaurants for a while, but making the change in some of the theme park restaurants is new for Disney.
