Review: La Cantina de San Angel

After finishing a day of the conference (the reason I’m here in Disney World is for a food blogger conference), I knew I needed a quick bite!

We’d been at seminars in the Odyssey Center all day long, and it was so nice to get out into the Epcot sunshine that I decided to STAY outside and headed right over to La Cantina de San Angel to have a snack by the World Showcase Lagoon!

La Cantina de San Angel

, Mexico’s counter-service restaurant in Epcot’s World Showcase, offers a refuge by the water with ample amounts of shaded seating. If you enjoy Mexican eats, need a quick bite, and fancy a margarita with your meal, La Cantina makes a great stop in your world travels.

This location opens at 11 a.m. (along with the rest of World Showcase) and lines quickly form since Mexico is often everyone’s first stop as they begin their tour around the World!

Guest Review: Bistro de Paris in Epcot’s France

Join me in welcoming R. A. Pedersen with an in-depth review of dinner at Bistro de Paris in Epcot’s France Pavilion!

I’ll give you fair warning – as an Epcot historian I can’t help but link this review to the history of the park as a whole. I’ll try to keep it light though, perhaps an anecdote you can tell over candlelight between courses during your next visit.

Bistro de Paris Story and History

There’s a bit of humor and history in the name of the Bistro de Paris at the France Pavilion in Epcot. In French culture a “Bistro” is more typically a small, less formal establishment than a standard restaurant. A good comparison would be along the lines of an English pub; in fact, the hearty bar food would be quite comparable to the sort of cuisine they serve: typically casseroles and simple comfort foods.

So why is the high-end restaurant in the France pavilion, the darling of the famed Chefs de France (Paul Bocuse, Gaston Lenotre, and Roger Verge), called a bistro?

Bistros in France were carved out of the basements in apartment buildings in order to feed the masses. Essentially the space was created from nothing to fulfill a need — and so goes the story in Epcot as well.

Update: France Bakery Expansion in Epcot!

UPDATE: Menu info and slated opening date for new Epcot French Bakery And new ice cream shop! Plus, new name for Bistro de Paris will be “Monsieur Paul” — a fitting tribute to Chef Paul Bocuse!

While nothing is yet confirmed by Disney directly on this, we’ve got some GREAT potential news for those who love the France Boulangerie et Patisserie in Epcot (which, coincidentally, won our Bakery Throw Down!)

In a Notice of Commencement filed with Orange County on February 23, 2012, Walt Disney’s Operations Development department indicates that the bakery in Epcot’s France pavilion will be undergoing an expansion! Let’s hope for a more efficient queue as well as ample seating!

Review: Spicy Chicken and Cheddar Poppers at Epcot’s Refreshment Port

Editor’s Note: As of 12/12/12, the spicy chicken and cheddar poppers are back on the menu.

Every once in a while I find another Disney junk food item that I can NOT resist. This is what happened on a chilly December day at Epcot’s Refreshment Port!

I had been wanting to try the Spicy Chicken and Cheddar Poppers here for quite some time, but I was always too full from eating other things by the time I got here (that’s the problem with a dining location in the middle of Epcot; I’ve already eaten too much from every angle by the time I get there!).

However, this time I was researching for our upcoming Disney Food Blog Mini-Guide to Epcot Snacks, and new I had more than just one reason to try these!

While the cost is a bit high on these, you do get quite a bit of food. This can easily replace a counter service meal in most cases.

So I stepped up to the counter and ordered my poppers. And while it took a little longer than I expected, it was WELL worth the wait.

Review: Via Napoli

I realized we hadn’t reviewed Epcot’s Via Napoli for you since 2010, so it was time to head back!

Via Napoli, a Patina Group restaurant like its neighbor Tutto Italia, is our vote for the best pizza in Disney World, hands down. In fact, ever since moving to Texas from New York City, Via Napoli is the spot that’s come closest to re-creating my favorite NYC pie!

For that and several other reasons, this has quickly become one of our favorite Disney World restaurants, and we actually visit quite often; but we can’t help ourselves and always get the same thing, so there’s no reason to report on it over here! On this visit, we decided to break our own mold and order a few new items just to mix it up a bit!

Atmosphere

Via Napoli takes up the back wall of Epcot’s beautiful Italy pavilion. The imposing building was built in 2010 and soon became one of Epcot’s most-loved restaurants.

Friday Happy Hour: Moroccorita in Epcot’s Morocco

I’ve been checking out a lot of those little food kiosks around Epcot lately, and one thing I couldn’t wait to try was a Moroccorita from the Morocco Pavilion! As you know, we’ve started a tidy little Disney Margarita gallery here on the DFB, and I thought this might be a perfect addition!

The Morocco Oasis kiosk can be found to the left of the pavilion when your back is to the World Showcase Lagoon. This colorful spot sports plenty to try, including Casa beer and plenty of frozen specialties.
