Are you among our many likeminded friends who were dismayed to hear that the Butterfinger Cupcake — a longtime snack staple at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — had disappeared from The Trolley Car Café?
If so, then you’ll be thrilled to know that the Butterfinger Cupcake is BACK in The Trolley Car Café bakery case!
A question remains, however: is it the same Butterfinger Cupcake from days of yore? Let’s talk about it…
We were so excited to find the Butterfinger Cupcake — also known as the Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Cupcake and the Toffee Cupcake — back in place on today’s visit.
Though there’s no signage in the picture above, the price is $5.49 (you can also get it as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan).
Before we begin, let’s take a look at the PREVIOUS version of the Butterfinger Cupcake below.
And next is a look at the current version.
First, let’s discuss the mound of buttercream on top. It definitely presents a smaller scoop now. And in speaking with a Cast Member, they understood the initial removal was due to the top-heavy factor of the previous version leading to the cupcakes often toppling over in the case.
The Cast Member also mentioned that the buttercream is actually peanut butter flavored (though we picked up more of a straight vanilla and butter taste in the trying of it, with just a faint hint of peanut butter).
And remember the thick layer of chocolate frosting that was another remarkable factor of the cupcake? Now it’s more of a thinner fudge sauce.
It seems there also may be some tweaking of the recipe still taking place, though, as the Cast Member we spoke with was surprised at the amount of the sauce in our cupcake, since the one she sampled barely had any.
So, the Saga of the Butterfinger Cupcake continues… but believe me, we’ll be doing some further taste testing, for sure! And if you get a chance to try it, please let us know your thoughts!

Thank you so much for reviewing this!!! I have never actually been able to get one, in years past I’d always try, but they were out by the time I’d get there. I’ll be there on Wednesday, you can bet I’m getting this first thing!

I don’t understand why they don’t use the same recipe they had for years that was tried and true? That is what we want. I am hoping they will also bring back that turkey sandwich wedge that was also sold at Starring Rolls.

When the Cappuccino cupcake comes back, THAT will be a celebration!

I loved the old version but even I have to admit it was a bit too much for one person. Hoping the new version is just as good only a tad smaller. Hope to try it in May.

I want it the same size. We sometimes split it or ate it ourselves. It is part of the reason I am a season pass holder. WE are obsessed with the cupcake. Horrified when they Got rid of it. Can’t wait to try the newer version in June

Just had one last week. It was better than not having one available at all, but still a little disappointing.
It tastes more or less the same (to me, at least). It’s just … less. Less of everything we liked about the old version.
Not sure I believe the line about the old version being “too top-heavy”. Starring Rolls sold these things for years and made it work. If Starbucks made it smaller out of necessity vs. a profit squeeze, then why make it smaller yet keep the price the same? I call b.s.

After listening to your review of the Peanut Butter Crunch Cupcake, I just had to try it. I’m a chocolate and peanut butter lover! I got one last weekend at Trolley Car Cafe. Honestly, I was very disappointed. I couldn’t taste peanut butter at all. For $5.49, It’s definitely not worth it. I made my own version this week and I got a great chocolate peanut fix. Mine were far superior.
