While cruising has long been one of the world’s most popular vacation and travel options, it’s exploded in popularity amongst members of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) and Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) in recent years, and we think we have some answers as to why.
According to Cruising.org, 67% of cruise passengers in 2025 were members of Gen X or younger, with an average age of 46.5, and 36% under the age of 40. So, why has cruising — which traditionally attracted an older clientele — skewed so young in recent years? Well, we believe there are several reasons.
Cost Effectiveness and “Value”
While cruises are by no means “cheap”, they often provide an all-inclusive experience where a passenger can lock in accommodation, transportation to and from a destination, food, and entertainment all for one price and one booking.
This can prove appealing to younger travelers who have seen firsthand how quickly inflation can wreak havoc across various industries, potentially causing a single element of a trip to suddenly jump in price, throwing a whole trip’s budget into flux. Those who live within driving distance of their departure port — and therefore do not need to fly to take their cruise — can especially benefit here due to the always fluctuating nature of airfare prices.
Safety
While there are obviously some dangers to cruising — from the typical dangers that come with any kind of vacation to more cruise-specific threats, including the spread of stomach viruses and the very nature of being at sea — their all-inclusive, controlled environment can still seem safer to some travelers than an open environment they’re unfamiliar with. This can be especially true for solo travelers, who may feel safer traveling alone on a large ship. According to Cruising.org, 12% of cruise travelers were solo travelers in 2024.
A Good Option for “Cross-Generational Trips”
Cruises also provide a solid option for Gen X members and millennials to bring together the older and younger generations of their family, all on one trip. The Cruising.org report states that of 28% of passengers cruise with three to five generations.
The Appeal of Disney Gone By…
From a Disney-specific standpoint, Disney Cruises arguably offer an experience closer to the Disney World that these generations experienced as kids in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s than the current parks do, thanks to trademark Disney service standards. guaranteed access to included theme restaurants, roaming Disney characters, and a litany of experiences that don’t need to be overly planned.
Thanks to economic and social factors, cruising is becoming more and more popular among members of both Gen X and Millennials. Stay tuned to DFB for more on industry trends.
